A new global review of 71 studies shows that breast milk contains multiple endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including bisphenols, pesticides, flame retardants, PFAS, phthalates, parabens, and PAHs, which can interfere with hormones and early development. The most reported impacts are neurodevelopmental effects and thyroid hormone disruptions. For example, flame retardants were linked to lower developmental scores, while pesticides were associated with poorer cognitive outcomes and higher ADHD risk.
Despite these findings, breastfeeding remains the recommended infant nutrition, with proven benefits for immunity, growth, and long-term health. Researchers emphasize the need to reduce maternal exposure to EDCs through safer consumer products, fresh foods, filtered water, and minimizing pesticide use.
The authors call for standardized sampling, improved detection methods, and long-term studies to understand EDC transfer into milk and their effects on infants, helping shape more protective lactation and public health guidance.
