A study in Science of the Total Environment reports that prenatal exposure to low levels of the pesticide glyphosate can cause lasting health effects across generations. Mice exposed during pregnancy showed metabolic and behavioral issues that persisted in their offspring, including glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, impaired memory, and gut barrier damage.
These effects occurred at exposure levels similar to average U.S. dietary intake and well below the EPA’s “safe” limit. Glyphosate-based herbicides, such as Roundup®, are the most widely used worldwide and commonly found in food, water, and dust. The study’s authors note that these findings, consistent with earlier research linking glyphosate to cancer and other health risks, highlight the urgent need to reevaluate existing safety standards and strengthen regulations to better protect human health.
