Headphone Investigation Finds Hazardous Chemicals Across Major Brands

An investigation by the ToxFree LIFE for All project found hazardous chemicals in all 81 pairs of headphones tested, including products from major brands such as Bose, Panasonic, Samsung and Sennheiser. Devices purchased in central Europe and via online marketplaces including Shein and Temu underwent laboratory analysis.

Researchers detected bisphenol A (BPA) in 98% of samples and bisphenol S (BPS) in more than 75%. Both chemicals are endocrine disruptors linked to cancer, reproductive harm and developmental issues. Phthalates, chlorinated paraffins and certain flame retardants were also identified, mostly in trace amounts.

Campaigners warned that prolonged skin contact — especially during exercise — may increase dermal absorption. While no immediate health risk was identified, experts raised concerns about cumulative “cocktail effect” exposure and called for stricter regulation and greater transparency regarding chemicals used in consumer electronics.
