Hidden Risks in ‘BPA-Free’ Baby Products Revealed

A 2021 investigation by Health Canada revealed that bisphenol compounds, including BPA and its common substitute BPS, leached from all tested baby bottles and sippy cups. The study evaluated 20 baby bottle brands and 13 sippy cup brands, finding that each released these chemicals into water as well as into liquids designed to mimic breastmilk, formula, and juice. Additional bisphenols such as BPF and BPAF were also detected. Notably, higher levels of chemical migration occurred in milk- and juice-like liquids compared to water.

Infants may face greater risks from such exposure due to their underdeveloped metabolic systems, which can lead to increased accumulation of harmful substances. Although BPA has been banned in baby products in Canada, the findings indicate that products still release BPA and similar compounds. This raises concerns that replacing BPA with related chemicals does not eliminate health risks but may simply perpetuate exposure to endocrine-disrupting substances.
