Kentucky Law Shields Bayer as Roundup Cancer Cases Reach Supreme Court

Lawmakers in Kentucky have overridden a veto by Andy Beshear to pass a law that could protect Bayer from state lawsuits over its weedkiller Roundup.

The move comes as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear a key case on whether federal pesticide labeling laws override state-level failure-to-warn claims. At the center of the controversy is glyphosate, Roundup’s active ingredient, which has been linked in some lawsuits to non-Hodgkin lymphoma—a claim Bayer disputes.

Originally developed by Monsanto, Roundup has faced around 200,000 legal claims. While the Environmental Protection Agency maintains glyphosate is unlikely to be carcinogenic when used properly, critics argue consumers deserve clearer warnings.

Meanwhile, Bayer is pursuing a proposed $7.25 billion settlement to resolve thousands of claims, as legal and regulatory battles continue to shape the future of one of the world’s most widely used herbicides.
