Parents and children worldwide, led by UK-based Mothers Rise Up, have staged protests demanding urgent action against air pollution, which disproportionately harms children. Only 1% of the UK’s 43,000 playgrounds meet WHO air quality guidelines, exposing children to harmful pollutants.
The protests align with the upcoming WHO Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health, where activists will push for stronger policies. Demands include transitioning from fossil fuels, halting new oil and gas projects, and rejecting Heathrow’s third runway expansion.
Air pollution is a major public health crisis, especially for children, whose developing lungs make them more vulnerable. In cities worldwide, emissions from vehicles, industry, and fossil fuels drive respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. While some cities enforce strict regulations, challenges remain in enforcement and economic impacts. In developing nations, weaker regulations make air pollution an even deadlier issue.
