A study in the Journal of Chromatography A found that recycling increases toxic chemical levels in polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a plastic widely used for food packaging. Recycled PET contained higher concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phthalates than new PET, with contamination rising alongside recycled content and recycling process complexity.
Researchers warn that hazardous substances can enter plastics at any stage of production, and because chemical monitoring isn’t mandatory, recycled plastics may contain unknown contaminants. Recycling steps like shredding, heating, and washing can also create new chemical byproducts. These toxins may leach from food packaging into products, posing health risks to consumers. The findings highlight the urgent need for stricter regulations to ensure recycled plastics are safe for public use.
