U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) is demanding answers from EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin after the release of a long-delayed toxicity assessment on perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), a type of PFAS “forever chemical,” was postponed. Completed in April, the report links PFNA exposure to developmental, liver, and reproductive harm, including lower birth weights and reduced testosterone and sperm levels.
In a letter, Pingree criticized the delay as part of a “growing pattern of interference with the Agency’s scientific work,” highlighting prior actions that rescinded PFAS regulations under the Safe Drinking Water Act. She urged Zeldin to commit to releasing the PFNA assessment and ensure future reports remain free from political influence.
Pingree, a senior member of the House Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee, has previously challenged EPA cuts to PFAS research grants in Maine and co-sponsored the Healthy Drinking Water Affordability Act, aimed at helping rural communities monitor and address PFAS contamination.
