Study Links Plastic Chemical Mixtures to Higher Mortality Risk

A new study in The Lancet Planetary Health has highlighted serious public health concerns linked to exposure to a combination of widely used plasticizer chemicals, including bisphenol A (BPA) and several phthalates. Researchers found that people exposed to a mixture of nine such chemicals faced a higher risk of death overall, particularly from cancer and cardiovascular disease. The analysis suggests that lowering population-wide exposure could potentially prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths annually in the United States.

Notably, the increased risks were observed only among individuals with low levels of vitamin D and vitamin B9 (folate), indicating that adequate nutrition may help reduce vulnerability to chemical exposure. The findings add to growing evidence that plastic-related chemicals pose a significant health burden.

With thousands of plastic chemicals in use—many untested or poorly regulated—the authors argue that current policies fall short. They stress the need for regulation that considers the combined effects of chemical mixtures, rather than evaluating substances in isolation, to better safeguard public health.
