Residents of Bentham have been found to carry extremely high levels of PFAS—commonly known as “forever chemicals”—in their blood, following earlier findings of severe environmental contamination. These chemicals, widely used in products like firefighting foam, are linked to serious health issues including cancer and reproductive problems.
Testing revealed some individuals had PFAS levels far exceeding international safety benchmarks, with one case reaching over 200 times the level associated with potential health risks in the U.S. Experts, including scientists from Manchester Metropolitan University, described the findings as highly unusual and concerning compared to general population levels.
The contamination has been linked to historical operations at a local firefighting foam manufacturer, where airborne emissions may have spread chemicals into soil, water, and food sources. While authorities continue to assess the risks, the findings highlight growing global concerns about PFAS exposure and the urgent need for clearer safety standards and stronger environmental regulations.
