Washington Program Targets Safe Disposal of PFAS Firefighting Foam

Washington State has launched a program to help fire departments safely dispose of PFAS-containing firefighting foam, known as aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF). PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” can accumulate in the body and are linked to reproductive harm and certain cancers, with firefighters shown to have elevated exposure levels.

The Department of Ecology has allocated about $500,000 for the initiative, which runs through June 2027 and covers collection and disposal at no cost to departments. After assessing available options, the agency selected high-temperature incineration as the only current method capable of destroying a significant portion of PFAS. The foam is transported by licensed hazardous waste haulers to a federally permitted incinerator in Utah operating above 2,000°C.

The Pasco Fire Department was the first participant, disposing of 140 gallons. So far, 95 departments have enrolled, with more than 39,000 gallons expected to be destroyed. Many departments are transitioning to fluorine-free foam alternatives.
