U.S. Physician Shortage Worsens Amid Hiring Challenges

A new Medscape survey of 1,001 physicians highlights mounting concerns over the U.S. doctor shortage, with many clinicians reporting heavier workloads and longer hours. Nearly 63% of respondents said there is a lack of qualified physicians in their local job market, while 30% noted declining application quality for open roles.

Although most workplaces are attempting to hire—nearly 70% of physicians reported active recruitment efforts—filling even a handful of positions has proven difficult. Hospitals face fewer shortages than smaller practices, but both struggle to attract young, qualified talent. Respondents cited limited growth in medical school applications, uneven residency training quality, and barriers for international medical graduates as key challenges.

The shortage not only hampers patient access but also fuels burnout: four in 10 physicians said staffing gaps force them to see more patients or extend their hours. Experts warn this cycle of burnout and turnover could deepen shortages in the coming decade.
