Menopause is gaining visibility, with rising awareness and a booming $17 billion market for treatments. However, demand continues to outpace scientific evidence, highlighting gaps in women’s healthcare research. Experts note that only about 6% of private healthcare funding is directed toward women’s health, limiting innovation and leaving clinicians with insufficient data to guide treatment.
While larger healthcare providers are expanding menopause care, many smaller companies are filling the void with unproven products and costly tests. Concerns raised in The BMJ highlight the growing use of unnecessary hormone testing, often leading to unverified treatments.
Drug development also faces challenges due to varied menopause symptoms. Hormone replacement therapy remains common, despite past safety concerns linked to the Women’s Health Initiative. New treatments like Veozah and Bayer’s Lynkuet show progress, but broader innovation is needed.
Experts stress the importance of more research, personalised care, and improved clinical trial access to better support women globally.
