Artificial intelligence may find its strongest early applications in hotel back-office operations rather than in guest-facing roles, as hospitality companies look for ways to improve productivity without losing the personal interaction at the heart of the industry.
Hospitality executives discussing AI at the Hotel Data Conference in Nashville said the technology could be particularly effective in handling repetitive, time-consuming work. Data analysis, revenue management, marketing and sales are among the areas where AI tools can reduce manual workloads and allow employees to devote more time to higher-value tasks.
Charlestowne Hotels, for example, has focused not only on providing AI tools but also on improving employees’ ability to use them. After initially seeing limited adoption, the company developed beginner, intermediate and advanced training courses designed to build AI literacy across the organisation.
Other hospitality businesses are already seeing productivity gains. AI can help marketing teams make website changes more quickly, assist sales employees in analysing information and preparing communications, and enable revenue managers to process performance data faster.
Industry executives, however, remain cautious about introducing AI too aggressively into direct guest interactions. Hospitality depends heavily on personal connections, and replacing those interactions with automation could weaken the experience hotels are expected to provide.
The emerging approach is therefore centred on using AI to support employees rather than simply replacing human roles. By reducing time spent on routine analysis and administrative work, hotels can potentially give staff more opportunity to focus on service, strategy and revenue-generating activities.
Successful adoption will also depend on choosing technology that solves genuine operational problems and ensuring employees receive sufficient training to use it effectively.
