A new tool for communities near Shell’s plastics plant provides air quality insights: Pennsylvania

A local advocacy group, the Beaver County Marcellus Awareness Community (BCMAC), has launched Eyes on Air, a real-time air monitoring website for communities affected by pollution from Shell’s petrochemical complex and other industries in western Pennsylvania. The site compiles data from five BCMAC-installed monitors and PurpleAir sensors placed by residents, providing real-time air quality updates.

Funded by a $5 million community fund from a Shell pollution settlement, the project helps residents track air pollution and assess health risks. Experts say this data can guide decisions on outdoor activities and medical concerns.

Beaver County, home to various industrial polluters, received a “C” grade for particulate pollution in 2024. The Shell complex emits hazardous pollutants linked to asthma, heart disease, and cancer. In March, BCMAC will launch a mobile monitor for targeted testing of carcinogenic chemicals. The project continues to evolve based on community feedback.
