Air Pollution Linked to Earlier Onset of Chronic Diseases in UK

A major study using data from the UK Biobank has found that air pollution may cause people in the United Kingdom to develop chronic illnesses earlier than expected. Researchers analysed over 900,000 hospital records from nearly 400,000 adults and tracked 78 long-term conditions.

Exposure to high pollution levels was linked to earlier onset of 48 conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, asthma, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease. Neurological and psychiatric disorders were accelerated by two to five years.

According to the Royal College of Physicians, air pollution contributes to around 30,000 deaths annually in the UK. Despite gradual improvements, the World Health Organization warns that air pollution remains a major global health risk.

Experts say pollution acts as a “silent accelerator,” increasing disease burden and healthcare costs, underscoring the need for stronger air quality measures.
