California’s Assembly has passed AB 1264, aiming to eliminate harmful ultra processed foods (UPFs) from school meals by 2035. The bill directs state experts to define the most dangerous UPFs by 2026, based on health risks like cancer, diabetes, and banned additives.
Starting in 2028, schools would begin phasing out foods identified as “particularly harmful.” While the bill faces industry opposition, supporters cite benefits for child health and early success in districts like Morgan Hill.
UPFs, packed with additives, sugar, salt, and fat, dominate U.S. diets and are linked to chronic diseases and mental health issues. Kids are especially vulnerable, consuming much of their nutrition at school.
If passed, California would lead the U.S. in legally defining and regulating UPFs, possibly prompting nationwide reform.
