Elon Musk’s xAI Data Center Under Fire for Air Pollution in South Memphis

A data center operated by Elon Musk’s xAI in South Memphis is drawing backlash for operating 35 methane-fueled turbines without mandatory air pollution permits. The turbines reportedly release between 1,200 and 2,000 tons of nitrogen oxides annually—surpassing emissions from other local industries. Residents of Boxtown, a historically Black neighborhood with high asthma rates, are experiencing worsening health conditions and accuse officials of neglecting public welfare in favor of tech industry interests. xAI has classified the turbines as “temporary” to bypass Clean Air Act regulations, a move environmental groups call a regulatory loophole. Critics argue these turbines function as stationary sources and should meet full environmental compliance. The xAI facility highlights growing concerns about the environmental cost of AI infrastructure, which demands vast energy, often at the expense of already-polluted, underserved communities. As AI-related data centers expand rapidly across the U.S., advocates warn of increasing environmental and public health disparities without stronger regulation.
