EPA Accelerates Superfund Cleanups With Faster Response Tools

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expediting hazardous waste cleanups by expanding the use of “presumptive remedies” and “removal actions” at Superfund sites, particularly those with common contamination issues such as former dry-cleaning facilities. These standardized approaches aim to shorten delays caused by lengthy assessments.

The agency reported removing over 700,000 cubic yards of toxic material in the first quarter of 2025, more than ten times the amount cleared during the same period last year. Community advocates note long-stalled sites, including the San Jacinto River Waste Pits and West Lake Landfill, are finally showing progress after years of inaction.

More than 1,300 Superfund sites remain nationwide, many located in low-income or historically marginalized communities facing prolonged exposure to hazardous substances. Experts caution that while speed is vital to prevent further contamination, it must be paired with scientific rigor to ensure long-term safety rather than temporary fixes.
