Experts Urge Stronger Regulations to Protect Children from Plastic Pollution

A federal advisory committee is urging the EPA to strengthen protections for children from plastics and related chemicals, citing clear evidence of health risks. In a letter signed by 23 experts, the Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee warned that plastics can harm children throughout their entire life cycle—from fossil fuel extraction to production, use, and disposal. They highlighted links to developmental issues, birth defects, cancers, and respiratory and immune problems, with greater risks for low-income and minority communities.

The committee recommended reducing non-essential plastics, supporting a global plastics treaty, and testing chemicals in both new and recycled plastics before use. They also called for stricter enforcement of existing pollution laws.

Despite the divided viewpoints, most experts emphasized the need for science-based action to safeguard children’s health.
