French Law Reviving Controversial Pesticide Sparks Health Outcry

Health professionals and advocacy groups are urging France’s Constitutional Council to overturn a new law reinstating acetamiprid, a pesticide linked to severe health and environmental risks. Passed swiftly by the National Assembly on July 8 to support sugar beet growers, the legislation has drawn fierce criticism. A student-led petition opposing it has gathered over two million signatures and gained support from scientists, progressive lawmakers, and public figures.

Acetamiprid, a neonicotinoid pesticide, is designed to paralyze insects but has been detected in food, dust, and water—posing potential health risks to humans. Studies associate long-term exposure to this chemical group with leukemia, neurological disorders, and hormone disruption, particularly in agricultural areas. Critics argue that young people and unborn children are especially vulnerable.

President Emmanuel Macron has deferred to the Constitutional Council, which is expected to rule by August 7. The decision could define France’s stance on public health versus agricultural policy.
