Residents near Gore-Tex manufacturing sites in Maryland are accusing WL Gore & Associates of contaminating local water supplies with toxic PFAS chemicals, prompting a legal battle over environmental damage and corporate responsibility. Two lawsuits—one filed by the state—allege the company knowingly released hazardous substances into the surrounding air and water, leading to elevated cancer rates and other serious health issues. Some PFAS concentrations reportedly reached up to 700 times the federal safety threshold.
While Gore denies wrongdoing, claiming it phased out PFOA and is cooperating with regulators, plaintiffs argue the company was aware of the health risks for decades but failed to act transparently. PFAS, dubbed “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment, are used in products like nonstick cookware and waterproof gear. Their widespread presence in drinking water has triggered growing public concern and litigation, as evidence mounts linking them to cancer, developmental disorders, and immune dysfunction.
