Kraft Heinz has pledged to eliminate synthetic food dyes from all its products by the end of 2027, becoming the first major U.S. food company to do so under new federal scrutiny of chemical additives. The move affects popular brands like Jell-O, Kool-Aid, and Velveeta.
Currently, about 10% of its products still contain artificial FD&C dyes, which will be replaced with natural alternatives or reformulated.
The decision follows an April initiative by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and FDA, linking certain dyes to behavioral issues in children, including ADHD.
While synthetic dyes enhance color, they're under increased scrutiny due to potential health risks. Kraft Heinz’s shift reflects rising consumer and regulatory demand for safer, more transparent food ingredients, though smaller producers may face challenges due to higher costs and supply limitations.
