Malaysia has enacted an immediate and comprehensive ban on the import of electronic waste, declaring it will no longer serve as a dumping ground for foreign refuse. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) announced that e-waste has been moved into the “absolute prohibition” category, eliminating the Environment Department’s previous authority to grant import exemptions.
MACC chief stated that electronic waste is now entirely barred and pledged strict, coordinated enforcement to curb illegal shipments. The move follows years of seizures involving containers of suspected hazardous e-waste at Malaysian ports.
Discarded electronics such as phones, computers and appliances often contain toxic metals including lead, mercury and cadmium, which can contaminate soil and water if improperly handled. The ban coincides with an expanding corruption investigation into e-waste oversight, with senior environmental officials detained. Authorities say stronger enforcement will protect public health, environmental safety and national security.
