Ongoing conflict in the Middle East is triggering serious environmental consequences, with potential long-term effects on public health, ecosystems, and essential resources. Strikes on oil facilities and military bases have released toxic pollutants into the air, forming dense smoke clouds filled with harmful substances like particulate matter and sulfur dioxide. In cities such as Tehran, these emissions have already caused breathing difficulties and other health concerns.
Beyond immediate air pollution, damaged infrastructure can leave behind persistent contaminants, including heavy metals and hazardous chemicals that pollute soil and water. Marine ecosystems in the Persian Gulf are also at risk, as attacks on ships and coastal sites increase the likelihood of oil spills, threatening biodiversity and fishing communities.
Experts warn that environmental damage from war can last for years, while weak governance and limited transparency may hinder recovery efforts and environmental protection in the region.
