New Analysis Reveals Sugar Industry’s Longstanding Influence on Public Health Science

A new Environmental Health article reveals how the sugar industry spent decades shaping scientific narratives to obscure sugar’s health risks and promote fluoride as the primary solution to tooth decay. Archival documents from the 1930s onward show that industry-backed researchers consistently downplayed sugar’s role in obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. At the same time, they amplified claims about fluoride’s effectiveness while dismissing concerns over water fluoridation, steering the American Dental Association away from sugar-reduction strategies.

The investigation also found that several individuals involved in these efforts later moved to the tobacco industry, carrying the same manipulation tactics with them — strategies that would eventually appear in debates around asbestos, lead, pesticides, and climate change.

The article notes that fluoride safety remains debated. A National Toxicology Program review linked high fluoride exposure to lower IQ in children, and an estimated 3.5 million Americans receive water with naturally elevated fluoride levels. The authors stress the need for regulators to recognize how industry interests have historically shaped scientific evidence.
