California Governor Gavin Newsom has delayed implementation of SB 54, a landmark plastic reduction law, following industry concerns, raising skepticism among environmental advocates. Passed in 2022, SB 54 aimed to cut single-use plastic packaging by 25% by 2032, boost recycling rates, and require companies to contribute to a $500 million cleanup fund.
Despite years of planning by CalRecycle, Newsom’s office unexpectedly rejected the enforcement rules, citing cost and fairness concerns. Environmental groups, however, suspect industry lobbying influenced the decision, as plastics manufacturers have long sought changes.
The delay comes as plastic pollution reaches record levels, harming wildlife and infiltrating human bodies as microplastics. Critics warn that postponing enforcement gives industries time to push for weaker regulations, potentially undermining the law’s effectiveness. With other states considering similar policies, California’s decision could impact national efforts to reduce plastic waste.
