Pollution from Pennsylvania Coke Plant Tied to Asthma-Related School Absences

A new study reveals that children with asthma living near U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works in Allegheny County face an 80% higher risk of missing school on days with elevated PM2.5 pollution levels.

Despite facing millions in fines for air violations, the 120-year-old plant remains operational and sought regulatory exemptions under the Trump administration.

Experts warn that air pollution in the Mon Valley is harming children's health and disrupting education, especially in low-income and minority communities.

PM2.5 particles, emitted by facilities like Clairton Coke Works, can enter the lungs and bloodstream, worsening asthma and increasing the risk of serious illness. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their developing lungs, and the effects are expected to worsen with climate change.
