Sewage Crisis Triggers Health Risks in Southern California

Untreated sewage flowing through the Tijuana River has exposed thousands of residents in Southern California to polluted air and water since 2018. The contamination includes industrial waste and releases hydrogen sulfide gas, a toxic compound linked to headaches, respiratory irritation, nausea, and long-term health risks.

Air quality monitoring has revealed hydrogen sulfide levels far exceeding normal urban standards, particularly during nighttime peaks. Many households report persistent foul odors indoors, with a significant number of residents experiencing related health issues. Studies indicate a strong link between increased river flow and a rise in respiratory illnesses.

Local healthcare providers have observed more cases of asthma flare-ups, coughing, and other breathing problems during high exposure periods. Although the United States and Mexico have agreed to improve wastewater infrastructure, experts warn that resolving the crisis could take years, leaving affected communities at ongoing risk.
