Starch-Based Bioplastics Pose Potential Health Risks, Study Finds

New research reveals that starch-based bioplastics, promoted as eco-friendly alternatives to conventional plastics, may cause organ damage, gut issues, and metabolic problems when ingested over time. In animal studies, mice exposed to environmentally relevant levels showed liver and ovary abnormalities, disrupted metabolism, and altered gut microbiomes—effects similar to those caused by petroleum-based plastics. Although derived from plant materials like corn or rice starch and labeled biodegradable, these bioplastics can release microplastics, particularly from textiles, raising concerns about exposure through food and water.

With bioplastic production expected to more than double in five years, the study highlights a lack of long-term health research. Despite their green image, bioplastics may contain harmful chemicals, including hormone-disrupting substances linked to reproductive and metabolic diseases, suggesting they may not be as safe as once thought.
