In 2024, over 4,100 consumer products were flagged in the EU for containing harmful substances — the highest in two decades. Items like cosmetics, vape liquids, toys, jewelry, and clothing tested positive for banned chemicals linked to serious health risks.
BMHCA, a fragrance banned in 2022 due to links to fertility issues and skin irritation, was found in nearly all flagged cosmetics. Lead and short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) — known to harm organs, reproduction, and aquatic life — appeared in cables and metal items.
Despite regulations, weak enforcement and complex global supply chains allow these toxic chemicals to persist. PFAS, lead, and similar substances continue threatening child development and long-term health. The findings highlight how bans alone don’t ensure safety — stronger oversight and safer product standards are urgently needed to protect consumers and the environment.
