Trump Administration Rolls Back Air Pollution Protections for Over 100 Industrial Sites

The Trump administration has granted two-year exemptions from Clean Air Act regulations to more than 100 industrial facilities, including coal plants, oil refineries, chemical manufacturers, and medical sterilizers. These exemptions pause enforcement of emissions rules targeting hazardous pollutants like mercury, ethylene oxide, and chloroprene—chemicals linked to cancer, developmental issues, and respiratory illnesses. One repealed rule had been projected to reduce cancer risk by up to 96% for communities near chemical plants. The administration claims the exemptions promote economic stability and energy reliability. However, critics warn the move endangers public health and disproportionately harms low-income and minority communities situated near industrial zones. The rollback reverses previous efforts under the Biden-era EPA to strengthen emissions controls and protect vulnerable populations, especially those living near homes, schools, and hospitals. Although described as temporary, the exemptions align with broader deregulatory efforts and may result in long-term weakening of air quality safeguards.
