U.S. Virgin Islands Sues Coca-Cola and PepsiCo Over Plastic Pollution

The U.S. Virgin Islands has filed a lawsuit against PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, accusing them of worsening the plastic waste crisis through misleading marketing and excessive distribution of single-use bottles. Filed on April 11, the suit claims the companies falsely promoted their plastic packaging as eco-friendly while knowing the environmental risks. Officials say the territory’s landfills are reaching capacity, and recycling is especially challenging due to high costs and the need for sea transport. The lawsuit alleges both corporations engaged in disinformation to preserve a sustainable public image, despite contributing significantly to plastic pollution. "Due in significant part to Defendants’ conduct," the complaint states, the islands now face a waste management emergency. Island communities often struggle to manage waste due to geographic and economic barriers. As global brands expand plastic use under green marketing, small regions bear the long-term environmental and financial costs. This case could set a precedent for corporate accountability.
