Washington Demands Army Accountability for PFAS Contamination at Yakima

Washington officials and residents are pressing the U.S. Army for greater transparency and faster action on PFAS contamination near the Yakima Training Center, where toxic “forever chemicals” continue to pollute groundwater. State leaders accuse the Army of withholding data, missing deadlines, and failing to reveal the full extent of contamination.

Although filtration systems have been installed at 55 homes, the Army has not disclosed GPS data or confirmed how many households still lack safe drinking water. Some wells show PFAS concentrations well above federal limits, even after treatment. Residents report ongoing health issues, financial strain, and poor communication, fueling demands for blood testing and community oversight.

PFAS, long used in firefighting foam and industry, are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and immune system damage. With limited federal oversight, affected families face an uphill fight to secure cleanup and accountability from the military.
