A forklift accident that killed Mathew Roberts, a father of two and chemical plant worker near Baton Rouge, is reigniting safety concerns as the Trump administration moves to shut Louisiana’s only OSHA office.
The office, which conducted 386 inspections last year, is one of 11 field locations targeted under a Department of Government Efficiency proposal. Former OSHA officials warn closures will delay investigations and reduce oversight, especially in regions like “Cancer Alley,” home to over 200 chemical plants and refineries and already plagued by high rates of workplace injuries and pollution-linked diseases.
Experts say losing on-the-ground enforcement would leave vulnerable workers at greater risk. “These closures will result in more injuries, illnesses and deaths,” one warned. With Louisiana ranking among the most dangerous states for workers, advocates fear this move further weakens protections in an already hazardous environment.
