A Connecticut food business has been ordered to stop production and distribution of its hot sauce products after state authorities raised concerns about processing controls and the potential risk of botulism.
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection's Food and Standards Division issued a cease-and-desist order to Phire in the Hole, a Monroe-based company, following complaints received from several local health departments. Authorities also requested that the company voluntarily remove its hot sauce products from the market.
According to the department, the products were manufactured without an approved process or the required licence. The issue is particularly significant for acidified and low-acid canned foods because inadequate processing can create conditions that allow Clostridium botulinum to produce toxin.
The affected products were distributed in Connecticut through Beardsley's Cider Mill & Orchard in Shelton between November 2025 and August 17, 2026. Officials said it was not clear whether the products had been distributed elsewhere. Products remaining at the Shelton retailer were placed under embargo by the state's Food and Standards Division.
The products were sold in five-ounce bottles under several names, including P.I.T.H BBQ, VK Vamps Kryptonite, Lemon Pucker Punch, The Hawaiian Ghost, Boo Bee Q and Reaper Creeper. A mixed package called Box of Phire contained four varieties.
The products did not carry UPC numbers or product codes, according to the report.
The company declined to recall the products and had not responded to the cease-and-desist order at the time of publication. No illnesses had been reported in connection with the products.
State authorities' action highlights the regulatory requirements surrounding the processing of shelf-stable acidified and low-acid food products, particularly where inadequate controls can create serious microbiological hazards.
