FDA Upgrades Ayco Farms Cantaloupe Recall Over Salmonella Risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has elevated a recall issued by Ayco Farms Inc. for 8,302 cartons of whole cantaloupes due to potential Salmonella contamination. Initially announced on March 24, the recall was upgraded to a Class I alert on April 20, indicating a high risk of serious illness or death.

The affected cantaloupes were distributed across Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, and California. They were packaged in food-safe plastic bags and packed in cardboard cartons, with 6–12 melons per box. Multiple lot numbers have been identified, including GC26257, GC26270, GC26288, and others.

Salmonella infections can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours of consumption. While most healthy adults recover within a week, vulnerable groups—including children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems—face a higher risk of severe complications.

Consumers who may have purchased the recalled fruit are advised not to consume it and to seek medical attention if symptoms arise.
