UK Probes Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Eggshell Supplement

Four people in the UK have fallen ill after consuming an eggshell membrane supplement sold online, prompting an investigation led by Public Health Scotland, with support from UKHSA, FSA, and FSS.

The affected product, Eggshell Membrane Capsules by Orgenism, sold on Amazon, eBay, and Orgenism’s website, was recalled in July due to Salmonella contamination. Multiple strains were detected, including Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Othmarschen, and Salmonella Livingston. Two cases are from Scotland and two from England.

The Salmonella Enteritidis strain showed resistance to multiple antibiotics, complicating treatment. The product also tested positive for drug-resistant bacteria like E. coli, Klebsiella, and Acinetobacter.

Commonly taken for joint health, the supplement poses heightened risks to elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Consumers are urged not to consume or dispose of the capsules at home.
