A new study presented at the American Heart Association Hypertension Scientific Sessions 2025 reveals that very few people use salt substitutes, despite their proven potential to improve heart health. This is particularly concerning given the widespread prevalence of high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes.
Salt substitutes, which replace sodium with potassium, offer a simple and affordable way to reduce sodium intake. Yet, fewer than 6% of U.S. adults use them. Over two decades of data also show that usage has remained consistently low, even among those with hypertension.
Excess sodium and low potassium intake are key contributors to elevated blood pressure. While reducing sodium can significantly improve heart health, awareness around salt substitutes remains limited.
Experts emphasize that increasing education and encouraging safe use—especially among eligible individuals—could make a meaningful difference in managing blood pressure and reducing long-term cardiovascular risks.
