Gaining weight at a younger age may significantly increase the risk of early death, according to a large study by Lund University published in eClinicalMedicine. Analysing data from over 600,000 individuals, researchers found that weight gain earlier in adulthood has a stronger impact on long-term health than weight gained later.
The study revealed that individuals who developed obesity between ages 17 and 29 had around a 70% higher risk of premature death compared to those who did not become obese before age 60. On average, participants gained about 0.4 kg annually, with faster weight gain linked to increased mortality from conditions such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Lead researcher noted that prolonged exposure to excess weight may explain the higher risk. The findings highlight the importance of early prevention to reduce long-term health complications.
