A large study published in JAMA suggests that moderate consumption of coffee or tea may help protect brain function as people age. Researchers analyzed data from over 130,000 participants tracked for decades and found that those who regularly consumed caffeinated beverages had a lower risk of dementia and slower cognitive decline.
Drinking around two to three cups of coffee or one to two cups of tea daily was linked to the most benefit. Individuals in this range showed better cognitive performance and an overall reduced likelihood of developing dementia compared to those who rarely consumed these drinks.
The benefits are believed to come from compounds such as caffeine and polyphenols, which may reduce inflammation and protect brain cells from damage. Interestingly, decaffeinated coffee did not show similar effects, indicating caffeine may play a key role.
While the protective impact is modest, the findings highlight that simple dietary habits like moderate coffee or tea intake can contribute to long-term brain health.
