Finger-Prick Blood Test Trial Aims to Transform Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

An international research trial is investigating whether a simple finger-prick blood test could help identify Alzheimer’s disease earlier and more easily. The study, involving 1,000 volunteers aged over 60 across the UK, US and Canada, is analysing blood-based biomarkers linked to the condition. Researchers are measuring levels of three proteins associated with Alzheimer’s risk, which can appear many years before symptoms develop.

Currently, diagnosis relies on costly and invasive procedures such as brain scans or lumbar punctures, which are rarely offered. Scientists hope the new test could provide a cheaper, faster and more accessible alternative, potentially even usable at home.

Participants will still undergo existing gold-standard tests so results can be compared. Early feedback from volunteers has been positive, though researchers stress that conclusions will only be drawn once all data is analysed. If successful, the test could significantly improve early detection and support timely treatment as new therapies emerge.
