In a robust effort to curb antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) has launched an aggressive statewide crackdown on antibiotic misuse. Led by Commissioner Dr. H.G. Koshia, the campaign enforces the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and aims to ensure responsible use of antimicrobial drugs.
Inspections were carried out at 4,433 drug sales outlets, resulting in 603 license suspensions and 11 permanent cancellations for violations, including over-the-counter antibiotic sales. The FDCA also seized 1,068 samples of antimicrobial drugs for quality checks and conducted eight raids on suspected illegal operations.
In parallel, the agency organized 19 AMR awareness programs, engaging over 2,400 stakeholders, including pharmacists, chemists, and drug manufacturers, to promote safer pharmaceutical practices.
Experts praised the initiative as a potential national model. For 2025–26, the FDCA plans to scale up surveillance with digital monitoring tools and enhanced pharmacist training, reaffirming Gujarat’s leadership in the fight against AMR.
