Heart Disease in Women Could Affect 6 in 10 by 2050

Heart disease among women in the United States is expected to rise sharply over the next 25 years, according to a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association. Published in the journal Circulation, the report warns that nearly 60% of women may be living with some form of cardiovascular disease by 2050.

High blood pressure is projected to be the biggest driver, affecting almost six in ten women by mid-century, up from about half in 2020. Increasing rates of diabetes and obesity are also expected to accelerate the trend. Researchers note that younger women are already showing concerning patterns, with nearly one in three women aged 22 to 44 predicted to develop cardiovascular disease.

Childhood health trends also raise concerns. By 2050, nearly one-third of girls ages 2 to 19 may have obesity, increasing their long-term risk of heart problems. Experts emphasize that early prevention, healthier lifestyles, and better management of risk factors will be crucial to reversing these projections.
