The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued a request for information (RFI) seeking feedback from the healthcare industry on how it can help speed the adoption of artificial intelligence, including in clinical care. The move aligns with the Trump administration’s largely deregulatory approach to AI, aimed at avoiding barriers to innovation.
Through the RFI, HHS is asking how it could use its regulatory and payment authorities to improve patient outcomes, reduce provider burden, enhance care quality, and lower costs. The department is also seeking guidance on updating digital health and software regulations to better accommodate AI, simplifying reimbursement to encourage uptake, and identifying research investments that could support best practices.
While many health systems have so far limited AI use to administrative functions due to patient safety concerns, HHS now wants to enable broader clinical deployment. The agency says its goal is to create a regulatory environment that supports rapid innovation while remaining proportionate to risk and protective of patients and health data.
