A group of 17 moderate Republicans joined all Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives to pass a bill extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies for three more years. The measure passed 230-196, defying House Speaker Mike Johnson, who opposed renewing the pandemic-era tax credits citing fraud concerns.
The subsidies, expanded during COVID, help roughly 24 million Americans afford ACA marketplace insurance. Without them, premiums for some have more than doubled since the end of last year.
The House vote, driven by a discharge petition, is largely symbolic, as the Senate has already rejected the bill and would need 60 votes to pass it. Lawmakers say they are working on a bipartisan compromise, expected next week.
Although unlikely to become law, the vote signals congressional priorities ahead of November’s midterm elections, highlighting healthcare affordability as a key issue.
