A new analysis from the University of Virginia Health highlights a sharp rise in kratom-related poisonings across the United States. Reports to poison centers increased by more than 1,200% between 2015 and 2025, reaching a record 3,434 cases last year. The surge is linked to greater availability and stronger formulations of kratom products.
Hospitalizations have also climbed significantly. Cases involving only kratom rose over 1,150%, while those involving combinations with other substances—such as antidepressants or illicit drugs—jumped nearly 1,300%. Over the decade, 233 deaths were associated with kratom use, most involving multiple substances.
Kratom, derived from a Southeast Asian plant, is often used for pain relief or mood enhancement. However, unregulated products sold as pills or extracts may contain potent or undisclosed ingredients, increasing health risks.
Experts warn that rising usage, especially among young adults, and dangerous drug interactions are driving serious and sometimes fatal outcomes.
