Harvard scientists propose a novel way to fight malaria—by curing mosquitoes instead of killing them. Rather than relying solely on insecticides, which many mosquitoes have become resistant to, researchers suggest using anti-malarial drugs that clear parasites from the insects. Two such drugs, absorbed through mosquitoes' legs, killed 100% of parasites in lab tests.
The goal is to coat bed nets with these drugs, offering a dual strategy: blocking bites and curing infected mosquitoes. The drugs remain effective on nets for up to a year, potentially offering a long-lasting, affordable solution. Field trials in Ethiopia are planned, but full results could take six years. If successful, future nets may combine both insecticides and anti-malarials for maximum protection.
