A new study published in Nature Medicine challenges the long-held belief that weight loss is essential to reverse prediabetes. Researchers found that many individuals can restore normal blood sugar levels without shedding pounds, offering a fresh approach to diabetes prevention.
About one in four participants in lifestyle programs achieved remission without losing weight, gaining similar protection against future diabetes as those who did lose weight. This suggests that improving metabolic health may be just as important as reducing body weight.
The key factor appears to be fat distribution. Visceral fat around internal organs increases inflammation and disrupts insulin function, while subcutaneous fat beneath the skin supports healthier glucose regulation. Shifting fat away from the abdomen, even without weight change, can improve outcomes.
Hormones like GLP-1 also play a role in regulating insulin and blood sugar. Lifestyle strategies such as balanced diets and regular exercise may help improve these metabolic processes and reduce diabetes risk.
