The UK has lost its measles elimination status after a significant rise in cases during 2024, when 3,600 suspected infections were reported. Elimination status reflects no sustained transmission, so the decision was anticipated given outbreaks over the past two years, including more than 1,000 cases in 2023. Experts cite vaccination rates below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity, with coverage at the end of 2024 reaching 92% for the first MMRV dose and just under 85% for the second.
The UK first achieved measles-free status in 2017, lost it in 2019, and briefly regained it in 2021, aided by pandemic-related social distancing. Renewed outbreaks in late 2023 contributed to the surge last year.
Dr Vanessa Saliba from UKHSA stressed that elimination is only possible if all eligible children receive two MMRV doses before school. Measures are being introduced to boost uptake, including offering the second dose at 18 months and catch-up vaccinations for older children and adults. Experts also call for improved access to immunisation and stronger public education to counter misinformation.
